The Rensselaer City Police Department is promoting child passenger safety through a public service program aimed at protecting the lives of Hoosier children on roadways. Statistics show 46% of car seats and booster seats (59% of car seats and 20% of booster seats) are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness (Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; October 30, 2020). Improper use of a child restraint can lead to severe injury, or even death, in the event of a collision. To address the need for educating families locally, The Rensselaer Police Department became part of a network of agencies throughout the state to establish a Permanent Fitting Station. The Permanent Fitting Station is staffed with nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who inspect child restraints, assist parents in selecting the proper type of restraint for their child and instruct families on how to properly secure those restraints in their vehicles. Since the inception of the program back in February 2006, technicians have inspected nearly 500 child safety seats, have taken numerous unsafe seats out of service and have provided 300 new seats to families in need.
