The Rensselaer Police Department is promoting child passenger safety through a public service program aimed at protecting the lives of Hoosier children on roadways. Statistics show that approximately 90% of all child restraints are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child restraint can lead to severe injury, or even death, in the event of a collision. To address the need for educating families locally, The Rensselaer Police Department became part of a network of agencies throughout the state to establish a Permanent Fitting Station. The Permanent Fitting Station is staffed with nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians who inspect child restraints, assist parents in selecting the proper type of restraint for their child and instruct families on how to properly secure those restraints in their vehicles. Since the inception of the program back in February 2006, technicians have inspected nearly 400 child safety seats, have taken numerous unsafe seats out of service and have provided 270 new seats to families in need.

Parents and care givers can leave a message to schedule an appointment by calling the Rensselaer Police Department Non-Emergency line at (219) 866-7602 to schedule an appointment with Officer Tara Hughes or by sending an e-mail to Officer Hughes at thughes@cityofrensselaerin.com

Rensselaer Police Department's Permanent Fitting Station is partially funded by the Automotive Safety Program, Jasper County REMC and parent donations. Donations are encouraged and appreciated. If you would like to make a donation to assist with the continuation of this program, contact Chief Phillips.
