Rensselaer to see decrease in wholesale electric rates

The start of a new year will mean the start of lower wholesale electric rates for 52 communities in the state of Indiana.  Beginning January 1, 2010, members of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) will see a 5.8 percent average decrease in their electricity charges from the power supplier.  The City of Rensselaer will see a 5.6 percent decrease in its wholesale rates, while the actual decrease in retail rates to customers will be slightly less.

"The past few years have seen a steady increase in energy prices," commented Raj Rao, President of IMPA.  "We are extremely happy that in 2010, IMPA will be able to offer some light at the end of the tunnel.  It will be welcome relief for many customers in these tough economic times."

"IMPA has traditionally provided some of the lowest wholesale electric rates in the state," commented Mayor Herb Arihood, IMPA Commissioner.  "This latest rate information simply reinforces the Agency's commitment to providing a reliable and low-cost power supply to its member communities."

IMPA plans its rates for the upcoming year in an annual rate study, which is submitted to and approved by its governing Board of Commissioners.  The Board is comprised of representatives from each of the Agency's 52 member communities.

The decrease in 2010 wholesale rates is due to a combination of many factors.  Most importantly, IMPA will be increasing its ownership of generation assets next year and will be replacing purchased power contracts with this new generation.  The Agency is also looking into various energy efficiency and conservation programs for members and their customers, promoting smarter energy use to bring even further energy savings to consumers.
