The Electric Department Consists of Three Sub Departments
Line Department: Builds and maintains all of the high voltage electric facilities within the City. This includes both overhead and underground electric facilities, such as poles, wire, transformers and switches. In addition, the line department trims trees out of the high voltage lines to ensure the quality of service to our customers. The line department has a Superintendent and six linemen.

Meter Department: Read all of the City's electric, gas and water meters monthly and work with the billing department to assure accurate billing.

Light Plant Department: Maintains our light plant. The plant consists of six diesel/natural gas engines and generators that must be ready to generate at all times. In addition, the light plant crew takes care of the vehicle maintenance for the electric department.

In addition to three sub departments, the electric department has a manager, a secretary, one employee that works at the municipal building in the billing department.

The City of Rensselaer is a full purchasing member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency "IMPA". IMPA is a statewide agency formed to provide reliable low cost electricity to municipal electric systems like Rensselaer. For more information on IMPA, please click here

With the City of Rensselaer being a member of IMPA and by having its own generating capabilities, we can provide our citizens with lower rates and a reliable source of electricity for our customers.

To any customer of the Electric Utility who has a medical emergency, the department will properly identify your residence. You must furnish the utility office with a medical statement from your doctor or a licensed public health office stating why the loss of electric service would threaten the health of someone residing in your home. You will also be given priority electric service during any major power outages. Please inform the utility office if you are no longer in need of "Priority Service" due to health requirements.
