The Rensselaer Police Department responds to the needs of the citizens of Rensselaer. The officers patrol the City to insure the safety of the citizens. They also respond to calls for services and calls reporting criminal activity. The Rensselaer Police Department can respond to these calls with patrol cars or the bike patrol.
The Rensselaer Police Department began in 1901 with the first Chief of police being appointed in 1939. |

Police Department Documents Available: Accident Reports: The fee for accident reports is $10.00 and can be picked up Monday through Friday from 7:00AM to 3:00PM (CST) at the Rensselaer Police Department VIN Checks: Police Officers provide vehicle identification checks required by the BMV after a $5.00 fee is collected for each VIN check completed. The fee must be paid at the Rensselaer Police Department. Hand Gun Permits: The local fee for Hand Gun Permits range from $10.00 to $50.00 depending on the permit you are inquiring on. Hand Gun Permit Applications can be picked up at the Rensselaer Police Department Monday through Friday. Lifetime Permits are also available. Fingerprinting: The Rensselaer Police Department does fingerprinting for anyone needing their prints done for employment, guardianship, etc. The Rensselaer Police Department does not charge for fingerprinting.
