The City of Rensselaer is an unusual Indiana Municipality. It is one of the few in the state to own and operate five utilities. Rensselaer operates its own electric, natural gas, water, wastewater and provides garbage pick-up. All of these are billed through the Utility Office.

All of your questions can be answered at the Utility Office between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Your billing due date is determined by your address. The Utility Clerk will inform you of your billing date when you apply for services.

How do you get signed up for utilities? It is very simple. All you have to do is visit the Utility Office. Here you will make the necessary deposits, which are available here.

New customers will be requested to supply their social security number. If you are a renter, you may be asked to show proof of rental and you may be requested to show proof of age. All necessary forms are available in Adobe Reader PDF format:

When the time comes to pay your utility bill, you can use one of the following methods: mail, bring it to the Utility Office, direct payment, web, phone (1-800-2pay-tax) or use the drop box located outside the front door of City Hall or if you wish you can now pay by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card or debit card.* Contact the Utility Office for direct payment or credit card information. Also, you may now access you account information online. Please follow the link provided http://webconnect03.civicacmi.com/rensselaer/

The City of Rensselaer offers different programs to help people with their utility bills. One of these is the Budget Billing Plan. Each spring, the City offers residential customers a payment option that allows them to pay a fixed amount so they will always know their utility payment each month. This is a great program for people who like, or need, to budget their money.

Another plan the city participates in is the Northwest Indiana Community Corporation (N.W.C.A.) LIHEP Program. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEP) helps pay the winter heating bills or summer cooling bills of low income and elderly people. This program is offered through the Jasper County Community Services. Upon approval of the application, the program provides funds to be used towards electric and/or gas bills from November 1st to May 30th. For additional information, contact the Jasper County Community Services at 219-866-8071.

The Utility Clerks also handle the sales of the City's trash stickers. These stickers may be purchased for $6.25 in sheets of five. You are not able to puchase the trash stickers individually at the city hall location. If you are in need of stickers but are not in the area of City Hall, they may be purchased at any of the following locations for $1.25 each:

County Market - Travelers Mart - Citgo - Walgreen's - Family Express
R&M Wholesale - Kems Trustworthy Hardware
